The App Store in iTunes has certainly shed new light into what makes the iPhone great. As good as the App Store is, there is certainly some need for improvement in certain areas. One of those areas the App Store badly needs improvement is reviews. People giving apps one star because of the price and people leaving reviews without having purchased the application are just two of the reasons the app store review process is broken. One of my favorite Mac sites is stepping up to the plate to make finding good iPhone apps easier.

i use this is a great website for finding Mac applications that I’ve written about before. Recently they have added an iPhone section to their website. It’s very easy to see what applications are popular and to get honest reviews. Those leaving reviews had to sign up and consciously browse to the iPhone section on i use this. I’ve found the reviews to be better quality and you also have people leaving notes that say problem X in version 1.x was fixed in version 1.1.x. One of my favorite things about the Mac and OS X is all the great applications that have been developed for the platform. When I first switched to the Mac, I was worried that OS X didn’t have as many application choices as Windows. While I’ve found that to be true, the quality of Mac applications is on par or better than Windows.

I swear that installing Mac applications and testing them is an addiction. To help feed my addiction, I’ve found a great website. i use this is a sort of digg/social network for applications.

You start by registering a username on the website. From there you can browse the application directory a number of ways. You can sort the directory by most used, all (alphabetical), tags, new releases, and more. When you see an application that you use, just hover over “i use this” in the application badge and click. The application is now added to your user application profile. After clicking you’ll notice that the application badge now says “stop using”. As expected, clicking “stop using” removes the application from your profile. The number listed in the application badge is the number of users who use that application.

Once you have gone through and added a number of applications, you’ll notice that you have Neighbours. Neighbours are users who use similar applications to yourself. You can browse their application profile and see all the applications they are currently using. You can also add friends which will add some additional features such as seeing applications they recently started using.
