It’s been a slow Apple news week so I’m going through some of my blogging notes and ran across a cool widget I never got around to talking about. App Update is a free dashboard widget that will scan your application directory and let you know if your applications are up to date.
Just install the widget, click the Refresh button in the upper right hand corner and wait a few minutes. What comes back is a list of your applications with the current installed version and the latest released version according to up to three sources.
App Update has a few configurable options such as auto checking, specifying update sources, and growl notifications. The one downside about the widget is that it doesn’t return results for all applications. There doesn’t seem to be pattern for applications with no results. App Update didn’t return results for Microsoft Office 2008, which isn’t surprising. But App Update also didn’t return results for CSSEdit, which is a surprise. Overall, it’s a handy widget though.
