Find Missing Disk Space With WhatSize
Written by Kevin Fordham
Have you ever wondered what is taking up all that space on a Tiger or Leopard installation? Did your Mac loose 20GB of free space in the last few days and you don’t know why? Do you want to free up some space on your Mac but don’t know where to start? WhatSize can help you find out what files are taking up space on your hard drive.
WhatSize is a simple tool by ID-Design, that shows you the size and contents of the directories on your Mac. When you launch it for the first time, WhatSize will take a few minutes to scan your hard drive. When it’s done, WhatSize displays a finder like column view that displays the size of the folder or file to the left of its name. Double clicking a folder will display the folder in a new finder window.
I’ve used WhatSize a number of times to find out what’s taking up space on my hard drive. Prior to upgrading my drive, I used WhatSize to delete some unnecessary files (printer drivers) to create more space on my 120GB drive. WhatSize costs a very reasonable $12.99 and also includes a free demo period. If you’re wondering what is taking up space on your drive, you should really take a look at WhatSize.
