skEdit 4.0 Released
Written by Kevin Fordham![]()
One of the first applications I purchased when I bought my Mac this year has recently been upgraded. skEdit, a great text editor, has been updated to version 4.0. Along with some new features, are some policy changes. Prior to version 4.0, if you purchased skEdit you received free lifetime upgrades. Starting with v4.0, small upgrades will be free while major upgrades will be paid upgrades. Anyone who purchased prior to v4.0 will continue to receive free upgrades however. In addition to the upgrade policy change, the price of skEdit has increased $10 to $34.95.
New to skEdit v4.0 is:
*Code Folding
*Code indexing
*Ruby on Rails support
*SQL Support
*Updated Subversion support
*Directory upload/download/deletion for remote editing
*Updated UI
*Much more
For a much larger changeset for v4.0, visit this skEdit journal entry. I’ve been using the new version for the past few days and really like the code folding feature. It’s very handy to get a whole div out of the way when working on a file. I’ve also started to use the remote file editing feature (available in versions prior to v4.0 I believe) and really love the ability to just edit a small section of a file and click save and the changed file is saved on my web server. I don’t miss downloading a file locally, opening up the file in my text editor, making the changes to the file and saving, and then uploading the changed file. Remote file editing really makes sense when you aren’t changing a large section of code.
You can download a 25 day demo of skEdit from the skEdit website. A license will set you back $35. If you’re looking for a simple yet feature filled text editor, give skEdit a try.
